KUNUNURRA TO WARMUN (TURKEY CREEK) AND PURNULULU (THE BUNGLE BUNGLE) NATIONAL PARK

We left Kununurra early on 29 June so we could arrive at Turkey Creek Roadhouse, load the car with essentials, store the caravan in a secure compound run by the Roadhouse, and head off to the Bungle Bungles. The distance into the Bungles is 55klms down the Great Northern Highway and then a 53klm dirt track in. The road is only suitable for 4WDs or high clearance verhicles. It is not suitable for caravans. We stopped at a visitors board just inside the gate.

The drive was very slow going and we had to cross a number of creeks, both dry and running.



About halfway in we hit a section of road which was like powder and as we drove through we went down a pothole and as we came up the other side it was like someone had thrown a barrel of powdery sand all over the windscreen. It was impossible to see out until the dust settled. You should have seen the car - it was white!!!



We finally got to the Visitor's Centre and as it was after 4.00pm it was closed so we had to fill out an envelope, insert the money and decide which campground we would go to. We decided on Kurrajong as we were told it wasn't as full as Walardi. Kurrajong is closer to Echnida Chasm and Walardi is closer to The Domes and Cathedral Gorge. We chose our site and started to set up the tent and prepare our evening meal. We found that we had left the most essential items behind - coffee, tea and sugar. Also the milk was in the Waeco and it was frozen. Oh Well!! Time to scrounge some teabags. I was only able to get 3 so we left them for breakfast. We were all having withdrawals by morning.


After an interesting night we were up early and had bacon and eggs for breakfast and of course our cup of tea. Then we packed up the tent (as it was decided we couldn't stay another night without hot beverages) and we were off exploring. Firstly we drove to Echidna Chasm. What can I say .... an awesome experience from the time we left the car and walked down a dry creek bed to when we arrived at the chasm itself!!! (Oh, did I tell you that we also left our sneakers at the van and had to walk/climb in our thongs. Not easy.)






















After leaving Echidna Chasm and walking back to the car over rocks, stones and sand, we drove to Piccaninny Creek Car Park, on the way stopping for a photo of the Domes in the distance.


It was another creekbed walk (although sand this time) to the Domes.

From the Domes it was about a kilometre to Cathedral Gorge. And it was ... you guessed it .... awesomer LOL!!
