After the Bungles we stayed at a freecamp at Leycesters Rest for one night and then on to Mary Pool for two. It is always a great spot to stay - well off the main road. The way in is over this road which crosses a river. It would most certainly be under water in the wet season.
We went for a walk down the road in. It is very narrow and when a car and caravan came in we had to pull our stomachs in so the car/caravan could get passed lol
Rose and I also went for a walk on the river bed after walking down a fairly steep embankment. Maureen can be seen behind Rose.
This pelican was fishing and I was lucky enough to get a shot of it "trawling" and then catching a fish which it promptly swallowed.
We also saw a couple of Spoonbills
Some Egrets
A pair of Yellow Masked Plovers
A kite swooping down and catching a fish with its talons (very clever and great to watch)
And a few Corellas. These two should have been called Lovebirds.
From Mary Pool we drove to Fitzroy Crossing. It doesn't have much in the way of shops but the Caravan Park is nice and clean. They have made Fitzroy Crossing a "dry" town now so it is impossible to buy any alcohol. We were out of drink so our Happy Hours just weren't the same.
From Fitzroy Crossing we drove to a freecamp called Nillibubica where we stayed for 2 days.
There were plenty of rigs pulling in and it was packed at the end of the day.
We drove on to Derby and stayed at the Kimberley Entrance Caravan Park. Our first place to visit was the Pier. The tide was in and the clouds made for good photography.
Although it was cloudy the sun still shone and it was quite hot. I took a shot of our reflection in the water. Arnold, me and Rose.
We heard a bit of commotion on the other side to the pier and thought someone had probably caught a big fish.
When we walked back around we saw this young guy very proudly showing off his Barramundi. He had caught it on a handline. Just goes to show you don't need all the fancy fishing rods that a lot of people have these days.
The following day it rained and Rose was hoping it would stop as she was going on the Horizontal Waterfalls flight the following day. It was the only day it rained in the whole time we have been away.
It was still cold and damp the following morning so Rose rugged up.
She had to meet the bus out the front of the caravan park.
I didn't get any photos off Rose of her tour but she was on a high when we got back. It was one of the highlights of her trip.
The following morning we headed towards Broome, but before we left Derby we drove to the Pier again to see the area with the tide out. They have 11 metre tides here and it is a sight to see the difference with the tide in and out.
From there we drove to the Prison Boab Tree. It is hard to imagine men being imprisoned in it.
We finally left Derby and drove back to the same freecamp as before - Nillibubica. This time a lone Brahman wandered in.
It was very tame so Rose gave it a pat. She also gave it some bread. You should have seen the bull's reaction when he saw the bread. He downed one slice and came back very excited for the other slice. Rose almost had to run back to the van when the bread ran out.
We drove on to Broome. Our first stop was the Visitors Centre to find out where we could stay. As the caravan parks are mostly booked out they have opened a few overflow places. We ended up staying at the Seventh Day Adventist Church grounds. It was an excellent spot. We had our own little courtyard. Pat and Maureen were parked around the back area.
We set up and then drove into Broome itself. Firstly the main street. This is probably the most photographed street ever lol
I booked an appointment to have my hair cut the following day. Maureen booked a perm. We had lunch in a lovely café. Then we browsed for souvenirs. Rose wanted pearls but alas not enough money in the coffers for the ones she wanted. Maybe in her next life ....
That evening it was the third and last day for Staircase to the Moon (a phenomenon that happens every month). Moonrise was at 8.37pm. The tide was out and the moonlight reflects on the wet sand. I managed to get a few good shots. As you can see the moon was starting to lose its roundness.

The following day Maureen and I had our hair done. Rose went window shopping and the guys went and did what men do ... find a Bunnings and Auto Shop. We all met up later.
The following day we went to Gantheaume Point. Such an awesome spot right on the tip overlooking Roebuck Bay and the Indian Ocean.

Rose had her Camel Ride so we drove onto the beach and set up our chairs so we could watch the camels go by. Arnold and I shared a bottle of wine but we kept some for Rose when she got back. She was going to need it lol
Her camel's name was Jack and it had only been on a lead for 2 weeks so was still learning. The guy who runs this team called it Black Jack because it didn't always do as it should.
The camels on the way down the beach.
And on the way back.
The sunset is always beautiful.
I had only had a glass and a half of wine but I was intoxicated with the surrounding so decided to dance on the beach lol It was very liberating!
Rose got back exhausted. As we had parked quite a way up the beach she had to walk to us after being on the camel for a while. Her poor legs!! She appreciated that we left her some wine.
So instead of going back to the van and cooking a meal we went to Maccas and had a Gourmet Chicken Hamburger Meal. Don't mind it once in a while.
The following day we drove down to the Wharf and took some photos then around to the boat ramp. We climbed over rocks and on the beach area.
From there we went and did some grocery shopping as we were going to Barn Hill the following morning and staying for a few days.
So bye for now. My next post will be Barn Hill to Karijini and beyond.
